Risk assessment and method statement
Free, no sign-up. Your details are saved in this browser only, and the PDF is made on this device.
How it works
1. Pick your trade
Electrician, plumber, roofer, joiner, decorator, plasterer, groundworker, builder, fitter, tiler or window fitter. The typical activities for that trade are ticked for you.
2. Check the hazards
Each activity brings in its hazards, who could be harmed, the controls and a score before and after. Change anything to match the site.
3. Write the method
The sequence of work, PPE, plant and permits are filled in from your trade. Add the job-specific details in plain words.
4. Brief and sign
The PDF ends with a briefing sheet. Talk your team through it on site and have everyone sign before work starts.

RAMS questions
Is a method statement a legal requirement?
Only for some work. HSE says the arrangements for demolition, dismantling and structural alteration must be recorded in writing before work begins. For other jobs a method statement is not required by law, but principal contractors and clients usually ask for one before you can start.
Do I have to write my risk assessment down?
Every employer must assess the risks. If you employ five or more people, you must record the significant findings. Main contractors usually want a written risk assessment whatever the size of your firm.
What is the difference between RAMS and a construction phase plan?
RAMS covers how you will do your own work safely. Under CDM 2015 a construction phase plan is needed for every construction project, before the construction phase begins. On a job with one contractor, that contractor writes it. Make a construction phase plan.
Do I also need a COSHH or fire risk assessment?
If the job uses hazardous products (adhesives, solvents, cement, cleaning chemicals), each one needs a COSHH assessment, and RAMS only point to it. The building’s owner or employer also needs a fire risk assessment for the premises. Our sister site FireRiskKit makes both: COSHH assessment and fire risk assessment.
Is RAMS Maker really free?
Yes. The generator, the PDF and the construction phase plan and toolbox talk tools are free. Pro is a paid subscription for firms that want saved jobs, phone signatures and a shared library.
Who is responsible for what the RAMS says?
You are. RAMS Maker gives you a starting point based on common hazards for your trade. You must check it fits the actual site, the people and the work, and update it if anything changes.
Do you see the details I type in?
No. Everything you enter is saved in your own browser and the PDF is created on your device. We only count anonymous events such as “PDF downloaded”.
